The 4×4 market changed in the 1960s from utility to an increased leisure market. In the 1970s the CJ range was turned over mainly to the recreational sector and the CJ-7 was designed with more room, simpler transmission and an automatic gearbox. The CJ-5 took on some of these extra features and until 1983 the two models were developed very much in parallel. Special package versions were issued to please buyers.
