Description

This book describes the parade, dress, service and field uniforms worn by Soviet General and field rank officers serving in the land and air forces, MVD (internal army), KGB intelligence and Border Guards from 1955 to 1991, when the Soviet Union finally collapsed. It also contains a collectors/buyer’s guide as well as ancillary information on Soviet orders, medals, awards and graduation badges.

Synopsis

This book covers all uniforms issued and worn by the Marshal of the Soviet Union, Marshals, Generals and all field rank officers from 1955 to 1991. It features a well researched and illustrated history of each type of uniform, the period it was approved for and how it was made.
However, this book is not just about describing and showing pictures of Soviet officers’ uniforms. It contains a comprehensive collector’s and buyer’s guide, designed primarily to help enthusiasts identify what they might wish to purchase. It provides anecdotes of the author’s purchasing experiences, including the various traps awaiting the inexperienced uniform collectors. Its contents will help any student of the Soviet military identify uniforms properly, and hopefully distinguish an original from a reproduction.

Agincourt : The King, the Campaign, the Battle

Agincourt took place on 25 October 1415 and was a turning-point not only in the Hundred Years War between England and France but also in the history of weaponry. Azincourt (as it is now) is in the Pas-de-Calais, and the French were famously defeated by an army led by Henry V. Henry V’s stunning victory revived England’s military prestige and greatly strengthened his territorial claims in France.

The exhausted English army of about 9,000 men was engaged by 20,000 Frenchmen, but the limited space of battle favoured the more compact English forces. The undisciplined charges of the French combined with the exceptional skill of the English archers contributed to a pivotal moment in European warfare. Not more than 1,600 English soldiers died; the French probably lost more than 6,000 men.

Juliet Barker’s shimmeringly brilliant narrative commemorates and analyses a canonical battle in British history.

SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE CO-OP

On September 11th 1999 “The Times” newspaper carried the front page article ‘Revealed: the quiet woman who betrayed Britain for 40 years. The spy who came in from the Co-op.’ Melita Norwood, the last of the atomic spies, had finally been run to ground, but at 87 she was deemed too old to prosecute. Her crime: the shortening of the Soviet Union’s atomic bomb project by up to 5 years.

At a time when the world faces fresh dilemmas caused by the proliferation of nuclear weapons, this is the remarkable story of a much earlier drama. After the atomic bomb strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, British and American intelligence estimated the earliest date for the production of a Soviet bomb to be 1953. In fact, the Soviet Union went nuclear in 1948, and tested an atomic bomb in 1949.

The Soviet Union’s bomb coincided with the onset of The Cold War, and threatened humankind with extinction. Melita Norwood was a member of one of those communist spy networks in America and Britain, who by guaranteeing those weapons of mass destruction threw down a challenge to America as sole superpower in the post-Second World War era. This fascinating book sets her in the context of the times, and uses her as a prism and focus through which to investigate the whole milieu.
